The Challenge
The decarbonization challenge in Asia Pacific is legion. But a growing number
of Asia-Pacific companies are starting to match their ambition with the scale of the
challenge.
MTR has committed to decarbonizing its global portfolio of urban railway transport and top tier shopping malls by 2050. A critical aspect of achieving this goal will be reducing and decarbonizing energy use. In 2023, MTR is seeking to jump-start work with a few, select technology partners in the areas of on-site renewable energy generation, energy storage, and energy-efficient modular offices.
Together with Carbonless startup experts and sustainability advisors, MTR is looking for solutions that can be trialed and proven in its home market of Hong Kong starting in 2023. What we are looking for
Scalability will be key as we face ambitious decarbonization targets. We seek solutions that have been trialed elsewhere and are able to scale in Asia. Focal areas comprise, but are not limited to:
- Onsite renewable energy generation
- Onsite energy storage
- Energy efficient modular temporary offices
- Any other or adjacent technologies to minimize energy use and maximize the uptake of renewable energy at a urban development site

How comprehensive and compatible is your solution? How fast can it be deployed?
Innovation
How novel is the solution? What are the projected improvements compared to existing practices?
Carbon Impact
What is the scale of carbon emission reduction? Any CO2- related revenue or cost saving?

How fast can the solution scale within the organization? What are the market opportunities?

What are the risk factors of your solution? How does it address existing risks?
Cost
What is the life-cycle cost of implementation including assessment of benefits?

The Challenge offers unique access to MTR’s decision makers at the intersection of sustainability, innovation, operations and investment. Six shortlisted companies will be granted the opportunity to present their solutions.
The select companies will embark on a two month long process with MTR alongside the Carbonless advisory and investment team to explore the application of their solution for the given project. For you, this means an efficient, no-nonsense fast track deal-making process, business validation and visibility associated with one of the world’s leading mobility and urban development companies.
Timeline
We are initiating a global call for applications on April 22nd, 2023. Our jury will then go through a thorough evaluation and matching process in early June and July and select potential partners for the project. Implementation and co-creation opportunities follow.
